The Students Union Movement of Arunachal (SUMA) has welcomed the initiative of the State Government to recommend simultaneous polls for both Parliamentary and Assembly constituencies in Arunachal Pradesh. We believe this is a historic and one of the most intelligent moves of the state government in the recent times, SUMA said in a release. Election process involves huge expenditure and conduction of the Assembly polls along with the Parliamentary elections will minimize the expenditure to a large extent, the release said. Also, the burden on government officials on election duty will be lessened. If the Assembly polls were to be conducted after six months, the whole machinery will again have to be geared up, which will be tiresome exercise, the release said. SUMA expressed gratitude to the Governor for accepting the recommendation for dissolution of the state legislative assembly by the Cabinet, which has cleared the deck for simultaneous polls. There are so many issues like that of inter-state boundary row with Assam, law and order, financial crisis, infrastructure development, etc which need to be addressed immediately. Only a fresh and stable government with the peoples mandate will only be able to deal with these urgent issues, it said. SUMA appealed to all civil societies, political parties, student organizations and citizens to welcome the move and get prepared for the polls. It further said that opposition to the initiative for simultaneous polls, if any, from any quarter, will be with only political and selfish interests. SUMA will oppose any move by any organization that opposes the simultaneous poll initiative, the release added.
