The Ten Days of Thanksgiving- Day One of the Countdown “As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.” - John F. Kennedy A thankful heart is not only the greatest virtue, but the parent of all the other virtues.” ~Cicero ITS GOOD TO KNOW: ABOUT THE FIRST THANKSGIVING * Of the 102 Pilgrims who landed on Plymouth Rock on December 11, 1620, only 56 lived through that first harsh winter. * Those who survived did so with the help of the Wampanoag Indians, whom they thanked by inviting them to a traditional three-day English harvest festival. * The menu included venison (brought by the Indians), wild ducks and geese, fish, lobster, clams, boiled pumpkin, watercress, dried fruit, berries, plums, and fried bread made from corn. WORD TO THE WISE: PILGRIMS AND PURITANS A pilgrim is someone (often a religious devotee) who embarks on a quest for something conceived of as sacred. A Puritan is a member of a very strict religious sect. (When lowercased, the term refers more generally to someone who is inflexible in religious or moral matters.) We tend to use these two words interchangeably when referring to the people who sailed on the Mayflower to escape religious persecution and established Plymouth Colony. However, only one-third of the original colonists were Puritans. The rest were people who had been hired by those who financed the voyage to protect their companys interests. “To speak gratitude is courteous and pleasant, to enact gratitude is generous & noble, but to live gratitude is to touch Heaven.” ~J Gaertner When we learn to give thanks, we are learning to concentrate not on the bad things, but on the good things in our lives. - Amy Vanderbilt
