The Textile Clothing and Footwear Union and the National Tertiary - TopicsExpress

The Textile Clothing and Footwear Union and the National Tertiary Education Union booked the gallery at the entrance of the Coburg Town Hall to do a photo display of Bangladeshi workers and the terrible tragedy of the Rana Plaza collapse that killed more than 1000 workers. The display was booked in months ago but recently, the council cancelled the booking, telling the unions that the photos were too graphic. The argument is that the foyer isnt an enclosed gallery that people choose to visit so the images should be the General rating and not Parental Guidance or Mature Audiences. My argument is that the images are no different to what you see on the news. Its true that some of the images were graphic, but they were in the context of other images of workes and protests that werent graphic. This exhibition is news and education. Its designed to evoke strong emotions because the building collapse that caused the deaths of so many workers was a result of profits being put before workers. I remember that the previous right-wing prime minister John Howard tried to censor the images shown on the TV news, using similar arguments. These governments dont want people to see what happens when countries like Australia invade other countries or what happens when bosses kill workers.
