* The Truth* “17 year old commits suicide due to alleged break up with boyfriend.” The newspaper headlines screamed. The boyfriend was detained in the police station. The victim’s parents were too pained to say anything except that their daughter’s boyfriend should be hanged to death. Any lawyer could tell them that a capital punishment wasn’t possible in this case. Divya’s body had been recovered from her house a day back. Doctors had said that the body was at least two days old. Since, it was prima facie a case of suicide, everybody was blaming Divya for her own death. This ‘suicide’ case was the main topic among the gossip mongers. “Uff, Kids these days. They die for their own selfish reasons. Nobody spares a thought for their poor parents.” “Haan didi, I toh tell you, I always thought this girl Divya had a loose character.” “Arre, you people don’t know anything, this Divya must have become pregnant. Her boyfriend, what was his name? Haan Adarsh, he must have refused to accept the kid. So she killed herself.” “You are so right Tina, she must have been pregnant.” “Tch Tch, This is precisely why I never let my daughter roam around with this Divya.” Adarsh’s parents refused to believe that their soon provoked a young teen to commit suicide. They would maintain that Adarsh was not guilty and they would get him out of the jail in a day. Who knew the truth? What had happened that Divya committed suicide? Nobody would ever know the truth. Nobody probably, except her maths professor who she had become physical with. He’d promised her to pass her in her papers. Overcome with guilt over her action, Divya committed suicide. Since law does not hold anyone guilty without proof, her boyfriend would be let off. He would always hold her father responsible for Divya’s death. Her father would always blame Adarsh. Society would always blame their poor upbringing and her loose character. “Teen’s boyfriend let off for lack of proof, investigation to continue.” The newspaper headlines screamed. “What investigation? Indian Legal Procedure is too tiring. These little kids, they have no sense how to behave. Don’t ever be like them Ritu, these kids spoil bring their generation a bad name. She was your friend no? Good, she’s not there anymore. She was a bad influence.” The professor told his daughter.
