The Truth about Vengeance: A song by Lamech: “Adah and Zillah, hear my voice, Lamech’s wives listen to what I say: I killed a man for wounding me, a boy for striking me. If there will be sevenfold vengeance for Cain, then there should be seventy –sevenfold for Lamech”. In Old Testament history the song above was called the “sword song”, found in the book of Genesis chapter 4. It is a song sang by Lamach as he celebrates the killing of a man who insulted him, it was the first documented record of anyone committing murder as means of revenge for insult. Lamech was a great, great (to the 4th generation) grandchild of Cain. He was also the first recorded person to take more than one wife. What is wrong with this picture from the song? So why is it that God said Vengeance is mine… it is not because vengeance is wrong, Vengeance is actually JUST, if it is carried out in a perfect manner. The problem is we are not perfect and can never carry out vengeance perfectly, every time people say they want to get ‘even’, they lie; nobody who was insulted wants to get even they always want to get one point up. In our sinfulness we cannot be trusted to carry out Just revenge for those who have wounded us, that is why God prohibits us individually from seeking revenge we can appeal for justice from the state because God has appointed the state to be his human agent for justice in a system that works. But ultimately God said “Vengeance is mine, I will repay” (Rom 12:19). “God dey!…” will no longer be called a poor man’s prayer but an innocent man’s prayer because if God pays back the crime done to the innocent, it will affect the guilty here in the present world and in eternity and could continue for generations as in Cain’s descendants who propagated wickedness and evil for generations as God revenged for Abel. So when you hear people preach “an eye for an eye” remember question that, question this at damansblog.wordpress questions everything, because the truth is out there. D.E Amans
