The U.S. congress have placed the final nail in the environmental battle coffin. What they have just done is far worse than all this allowing Keystone XL pipeline environmental debate weve been burden with in the news for the last 5 years or so. They have essentially given the EPA the green to allow the worse polluting companies to pollute even more ...an all you can pollute buffet if you wish! Lets make sure that the CEPA (Canadian Environment Protection Agency) doesnt follow suite, because we all know that the Harper government just loves to mimic what the Yanks do. (see bottom of page for attached article) So, now the only scientists that are allowed to give opinions to the EPA on subjects of environmental protection are those that work for the industrial companies that have a direct economic concern relative to the pollution hazard associated with that company. The EPA should be called the Enviromental Pollution Agency because all they do is set limits on pollution. But the real problem with pollution is that it’s cumulative, It builds up over time. For example, take something as common as arsenic from well water ... overtime it builds up in your body as you drink more and more water, and so its very hard to flush out of your system. If you drink enough well water it could actually kill you depending on the level of arsenic in that water. Excerpt from the legislation law passed saying that independent scientists can not be used and here’s the wording: “The research scientists at barred under the act from advising any topic that might directly or indirectly involve review or evaluation of their own work.” So in other words the only people barred from advising and or presenting the research results to the EPA on a particular chemical are those who have actually studied its toxicity and or effect on the environment. And now, the only people who can give and publish advice are only the scientists who have recognized affiliation with a University, or that pollution producing industry, or government agencies associated with regulating those very same polluting industries. Other than being an insider scientist you’re considered an outsider and they will just quietly ignore you. It’s a quiet ignorance. Peer review is supposed to keeps goofy science out of there. The problem with Peer review is that there becomes a monopoly with who actually reviews the research paper there. They are the people who cycle the government funding meant for research publication. And that cycle is monopolized by a small group of people. And if funding is increased then it just gives more monopolizing power to them small groups. When the Fukushima radiation became alarmingly present on the U.S. shores the EPA responded by promptly closing down 8 out of 18 radiation measuring stations that were in located the hardest hit area of California. Then to further calm the good people of that nation the EPA magically changed the numbers ... they raised the amount of radiation that the population could safely absorb and ingest. It wouldn’t do for the huge agro farms producers not to be able to sell their tainted products, or for the dairies to be stuck holding all that radioactive milk. Stuff them! iflscience/environment/epa-barred-getting-advice-scientists
