The UN agency for Palestinian refugees says women and children make up a sizeable number of Palestinian fatalities caused by Israeli attacks on the besieged Gaza Strip. At a press conference in Gaza City, senior officials from the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) said on Monday that a large number of fatalities in Gaza are women and children. According to a recent UN report, nearly 80 percent of the victims have been civilians. UNRWA sources also say that at least 17,000 people from northern Gaza have sought refuge in UN shelters over the past 24 hours. Reports say the residents of the besieged enclave’s north flee their homes in fear of an imminent ground invasion. The Israeli military said it has ordered Palestinians in northern Gaza to “leave their homes for their own safety.” Gaza’s Interior Ministry urged residents in the area to ignore Israel’s warnings and stay in their homes, saying the announcement was Israeli “psychological warfare” and an attempt to create confusion. The latest developments come as there is no let up in Israel’s deadly attacks against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. At least 40 people have lost their lives in the impoverished territory over the past twenty four hours. Israel continues to pound the Gaza Strip for the seventh straight day. The overall death toll from seven days of Israeli attacks on the coastal enclave has risen to 175. The Israeli military began its latest assault on Gaza last Tuesday. More than 1,200 Palestinians have been also injured as a result of the ongoing assaults.
