The UNC Youth on a Mission are breaks barriers!!!!!! Under the leadership of its Chairman Nicholas Morris children are given opportunities to gain access to the technological world. The UNC Youth Arm in 2011, under my guidance as chairman and continuing up to this very day, persevere in our aim to bridge to the ‘digital divide’. Upon identifying this digital divide, the Youth Arm’s Information and Communication Technology Policy was created in order to narrow the gap between individuals, households, businesses and geographic areas at the various socio-economic levels. The youth arm has taken into consideration the imbalance in both the physical access to technology, the required resources and the skills needed to participate as a computer literate and truly digital citizen. In 2002, the then General Secretary of the United Nations, Mr. Kofi Anan commented on the digital divide saying: “The new information and communication technologies are among the driving forces of globalization. They are bringing people together, and bringing decision-makers unprecedented new tools for development. However, at the same time, the gap between information ‘haves’ and ‘have not’s ‘is widening, and there is a real danger that the world’s poor people will be excluded from the emerging knowledge – based global economy.” Nationwide there are a number of families who are poverty stricken and as a direct consequence, the children and youth of these families constitute the majority of the digital divide. These less fortunate youth are most often if not always motivated to learn, and thus are the sole benefactors of this UNC Youth Arm initiative, having been provided with new or refurbished computers. The 1st Youth Computer Centre Bagatelle, Diego Martin Under his leadership as Chairman, the UNC Youth Arm launched its first Computer Youth Center in Bagatelle Diego Martin – an area represented by the opposition party. Given the Honorable Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar’s mandate to bring help to all, the UNC Youth Arm began breaking barriers very early in my tenure going to crime ridden areas such as Laventille and Bagatelle. It has been my belief and I still hold to it that all Youth deserve a chance, and my drive has been to ensure that in whatever capacity available to me, that Youth throughout Trinidad & Tobago, regardless of age, color and race would benefit from the UNC Youth Arm, in this case our Information and Community Technology Programme.
