The US and China agreed to a deal to cut greenhouse gases. That - TopicsExpress

The US and China agreed to a deal to cut greenhouse gases. That is, well, huge. Why? Because China and the US are #1 and #2 in the world in greenhouse gas emissions. The US is cutting emissions by 26-28% below 2005 levels by 2025. Heres the question: Should we send Mr. Inhofe a thank you note? If you will indulge me and let me have some fun with this, follow me, here: President Obama looked at the likely roster of Senate Chairmanships, saw Chairman Inhofe, Environment/Public Works and then he frantically picked up the phone and called the President of China. I imagine it may have gone something like this: President Obama: President Xi, I have some news you should hear. Are you sitting down? Okay - How should I say this? Have you by any chance ever heard of the US Senator who wrote a book where he challenges every scientist in the world ? Yes, yes, the one who doesnt believe God gave us free will and dominion over the Earth. No, he isnt a scientist but he reached scientific conclusions.....Yes, he disputes NASA. Yes, NASA !! Well, we elected him as the Chairman of our Senate Environmental Committee last week. President Xi: You did what !!?? Mr.. President, I have to say Im very disappointed in your country, sir. Ive been saying this about the Americans for years now. President Obama: President Xi, with all due respect the Chinese have been ignoring the issue for decades. You guys are #1 in the world in emissions. But this is no time for bickering, our military leaders have said its a national security threat so its not just scientists anymore. President Xi: Yes, ours say the same thing. We just never thought it would come to this. You Americans claim to lead the world. What is this Senators name? President Obama: Inhofe. James Inhofe. I served with him in the Senate. This is serious. When can we meet to come to terms on this? Yes, Im available next week. Moral of the story - It took the fear of Inhofe becoming Chair of the Environmental Committee to motivate China. Thats my theory and Im sticking to it. #ThanksJim
