The US needs to restructure its entire approach to the world, - TopicsExpress

The US needs to restructure its entire approach to the world, beginning with the unshakable fact that we cannot defend the world. We should also add that we cannot invade a nation without instituting an all inclusive draft. More than anything, what Afghanistan and Iraq taught us is that we may be able to invade a country with 100,000 troops (make no mistake, the invasion of Iraq was a stunning victory,) but the following stabilization, occupation, rebuilding (the occupation, however, was a dismal, bloody failure) will require hundreds of thousands. Redeploying troops, four or five times is totally unacceptable and amounts to torture, as far as Im concerned . . . but I digress . . . We must have the best military in the world. We must be able to respond to any threat and threaten any foe, but that doesnt mean our military spending must equal the rest of the world. We can project worldwide, but any significant or sustained action must involve allies and the world. We can spearhead and provide administrative and logistical support, but we cant and must not go it alone. Let the world carry the burden. We cant because US has to come first. Ive said this several times, but it needs repeating: a friend pointed out that if every nation had to bear the full cost of their own defense, no one would be willing or able to trouble its neighbors. Its a concept we need to export to the world.
