The USA cant use ISIS as a pretext for attacking the Assad - TopicsExpress

The USA cant use ISIS as a pretext for attacking the Assad government in Syria. We have an existing agreement on WMD, including an understanding not to take further action against Syria so long as they continue to comply. Meanwhile, the Syrian civil war and the countrys internal disputes, may not form the basis of intervention in Syria, where WMD are no longer the issue. Like Iraq, although unstable, Syria remains a sovereign state, under Assad. Any attempt to expand the conflict against Assads government, using ISIS as an excuse, would result in a war like the war in Iraq. Obamas claim that he wont send combat troops to the contrary notwithstanding, fighter bomber pilots and naval ship personnel are also combat troops by any definition of the term, and a war is a war, even if not conducted on the ground. The issue here is whether there will be escalation or widening of the war, not whether were involved in combat--most definitely we are in combat in Syria now. Whats more, top US military officers keep playing the dangerous game of speculating about what actions by ISIS or others (potentially including Assad) would justify sending in ground troops. The US knows Assad does not completely control its own forces. Yet if a Syrian Army unit were to attack any coalition aircraft, this apparently would justify intervention against Assad (see article below), even though the coalition is violating Syrias sovereign air space. A grave danger, among others, is that a rogue element in our own government that favors Sunni groups may create a cause-of-war incident in order to rationalize an Iraq-style invasion of Syria. For this reason, there should be coordination with Syria, perhaps through Russia, as in the case of the WMD agreement--so that we dont get dragged into another war by deceit or accident. businessinsider/obama-assad-shooting-at-american-planes-would-lead-to-his-overthrow-2014-9
