The USS Maine Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery is the actual main mast from the USS Maine, which was sunk in Havana Harbor, Cuba on Feb. 15, 1898. The memorial was dedicated at Arlington National Cemetery on Feb. 15, 1915. Arlington National Cemetery is working with the National Park Service Historic Preservation Training Center to restore the memorial. This week, HPTC, with the assistance of Courtney Andersen, the historic ship rigging supervisor at the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park, took down some of the memorials rigging to determine how to restore it. Andersen is an expert in historic rigging and will recreate the rigging as part of the overall restoration of the memorial.
