The Uncut India: You need to watch your neighbour when you walk on a road! In Hindu religion, an elephant is a Holy Deity (God). The story goes like this. When Lord Shiva (Hindu God) goes for hunting, his wife Goddess Parvathi makes a figure with sandle wood powder and breathes life into it, and a son is born to her. While she was taking bath, she keeps her son as guard to prevent anyone coming into the bath room. When Lord Shiva comes, Parvathis son prevents him to enter the house as his mother was taking bath. At that time neither of them, Lord Shiva or the newly made son did not know each other . Lord Shiva gets angry and ask his men to kill him. They unfortunately decapitate him. Goddess Parvathi goes into inconsolable grief. Lord Shiva asks his men to get any head that is facing North. They find an elephant sleeping facing North in the forest. They decapitate the elephant head and Lord Shiva joins the head and the body and Lord Ganesh is born again. Since then an elephant is Holy to Hindus. If you see carefully, the Gentleman in red shirt, touches the elephant with his right hand and puts the hand straight to the forehead, which is a short form of worship. On the fore head of elephant, there is a bottu white circular mark, which tells the elephant you are seeing is a temple elephant.
