The United Nations Human Rights Committee on Economic, Social and - TopicsExpress

The United Nations Human Rights Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR) considered the periodic reports of the Czech Republic, Ukraine and Serbia and issued its concluding observations on their website. The ERRC has submitted written comments concerning these three countries, jointly with partner NGOs, to highlight the human rights issues facing Roma for consideration by the CESCR at its 52nd session from 28 April to 23 May 2014. We are very pleased that the Committee reflected several of our concerns in its concluding observations. In all three countries access to education continues to be a problem, with either segregation in Roma-only schools, or overrepresentation of Romani children in certain types of education, which amounts to de facto segregation. Housing is also an issue in all three countries, and both substandard housing and threats of evictions are highlighted by the Committee. ERRC calls on the three governments to develop necessary measures to address the CESCR’s remarks.
