The VAF would like to wish our veterans and families a peaceful, reflective Veterans Day. Each of you earned the chance to be respected and heard, and you deserve 364 more days of it each year. If youre not a veteran, instead of thanking a veteran, ask them about their service. It means so much more when people listen, to our words, our pain and camaraderie. Open-ended questions are the best. Some quick ideas for questions: How did your family cope? What was it like overseas? Do you feel like youre home again? How many tours did you do? Where did you serve? What did wearing the uniform mean to you? Do you need help? Do you feel like youre being helped? Also talk to them about your family who may have served. Questions to avoid: Did you kill anyone? Do you hate Muslims? If you disagreed with Iraq, how could you go and fight there? (thats a tough question to answer) ---actually, avoiding politics today is the best course Please take time and sit with a veteran if you can, or read about them (online). Even visit a memorial, if you cant find one. Thank you, once again to everyone whos served and the families that served alongside them. You are all in our hearts at the Veterans Art Foundation.
