The Vatican Congregation for Divine Worship has been studying the Sign of Peace at Mass for four years (Yep, thats what they do in the Vatican) and they released their report today. There was some thought that this ritual might be moved to an earlier point in the Mass but it will stay where it is. BUT, they did issue 4 guidelines in an attempt to ensure reverence during this occurrence: 1.) There should be no song of peace. 2.) It is absolutely optional and may be omitted at the discretion of the priest-celebrant at Mass 3.) The congregation should limit the sign of peace to those immediately nearby only. Greeting one or two people is a symbolic way of greeting everyone. 4.) The sacred ministers (priests and deacons) should NOT leave the sanctuary to exchange peace in the congregation. This includes leaving to offer congratulations at weddings or condolences at funerals. In short-- if you do it, keep it short, focused, and reverent!
