The Philadelphia Mummer’s Parade on New Year’s Day has a somewhat controversial past. Back in the 1800’s, it was the tradition to destroy storefronts to celebrate New Year’s Day. In 1900, local authorities decided to change the tenor of the celebration into something positive. With a parade of mummers (actors), the citizenry could celebrate the holiday in a constructive and creative way. Now thats bringing positivity to the community!
