The Vienna Criminal Court has an Austrian couple convicted of fraudulent trading in dogs. Both defendants were sentenced to two years imprisonment , of which eight months unconditional. FOUR PAWS sees this as a milestone in the history of animals : We are pleased that the court not only the fraudulent act punishable offense but also the abuse of animals , says Barbara Gennevilliers , campaign manager at FOUR PAWS . Breeding and smuggling of puppies is big business and caused many casualties among both dogs and consumers . Following information from FOUR PAWS police could arrest puppy dealers in late 2012. The couple had a lot to young puppies sold coming from Slovakia with fake vaccination papers. All the animals were seriously ill and some even went dead . Of Gennevilliers continues: The court found that this was not just a matter of consumer fraud , but also organized by the convicts crime at the expense of animals. Not only do the puppies have to suffer, but also the mother who all their lives being abused as a puppy producers . Maleficent dog trade is not a trivial matter , so this is a victory for justice and an important day for animal welfare .
