The WILL of Bob Crow RIP [11 March 2014] In many ways Bob Crow, boss of the Rail Maritime and Transport (RMT) Union who passed away, aged 52, in the early hours, today 11 March 2014, is a hero. He made his position look indispensable, he carried not only his union members but I believe ordinary members of the public as well. In the past I have railed at him and his union for scuppering my travel plans on one of his member’s strikes, usually the Underground or Metro system has the most effect. Sometimes the bus lines as well. Nevertheless, he wasn’t in my view, a bad man at all. I believe he was effective because he was a working class chap who never attempted advanced education and never pretended to be something other than he was, a man’s man. He dragged himself up by his bootstraps and understood the needs of the ordinary member of the public. He entertained little nonsense and came up against some of the more accomplished minds in UK Plc and never lost face. He was never slow in coming forward but would carry out his business in a measured manner. He’d not call a strike at a moment’s notice but whether collectively or trying to seek redress for an individual member he would get his membership behind him. Most recently, he had an exchange of sorts with the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, on British TV without meeting [yes, I know]. Viewers were treated to posturing between the two; trading assertions by phone while being filmed from two different locations!! Mr Crow’s WILL to seek better working conditions for his membership was sure, unshakeable and unrelenting. I believe his legacy is that he would be a very hard act to follow as boss of RMT. My condolences to his loved ones and his army of fans in The RMT. May his soul rest in peace. bbc.co.uk/news/uk-26527325
