The Ward family was always Just Passing Through when they traveled from cotton field to cotton field living out of their covered wagon, until they became sharecroppers in Dover, Arkansas in 1926. The landowners wife and children were abandoned; left to fin for themselves. Mr. Will and Ms. Parthina Ward took the Cartwright family under their wings. When Walter Cartwright retuned from his extended trip to New Orleans, he seemed angered that his wife and children had managed to survive without him. Walter Cartwright was a cruel hearted man. His sons, Robert and Clanton never knew any other way of living, except Walters way. It took being abandoned by their father to see the world and those around them as kind and loving.
