The Warmth of Other Suns has kept me on the road for four straight - TopicsExpress

The Warmth of Other Suns has kept me on the road for four straight years and has taken me from the United Kingdom to Idaho in just the last six weeks. Will resume updates in the coming days but wanted to share a few photos from Washington, DC, where I was invited to deliver a public reading at the Pen-Faulkner annual gala, along with David Baldacci, Ishmael Beah (A Long Way Gone), Piper Kernan (Orange is the New Black) and other wonderful writers. Asked to write an original piece exploring the theme, danger, I read a story about a family facing danger in the Jim Crow South during the time of the Great Migration. The storys suspense meant people in the audience nearly had to hold their breath until the last sentence. (I will provide a link to the Pen-Faulkner website when a recording of the event has been uploaded.) Heres a picture of honorees that night at the Folger Shakespeare Thrater, along with the master of ceremonies, Calvin Trillin, including front row, left to right: David Baldacci, Ishmael Beah, Isabel Wilkerson, Calvin Trillin (standing), Piper Kernan, Mitchell Jackson and Elliott Holt. And heres a joyful selfie, from the following day, of myself and Ishmael Beah, the one-time child soldier who survived war in Sierra Leone, journeyed to America, graduated Oberlin and wrote a No. 1 New York Times bestselling memoir. An honor to participate.....
