The Welsh Springer Spaniel Club Assessment Test ( Working Test) held at Brookwood, Surrey on 22 September 2013. The Welsh Springer Spaniel Club held its autumn assessment test of the year in in the woods to the rear of Brookwood cemetery in Surrey. The 3 Clumbers and 13 Welsh Springer Spaniel and 1 Field Spaniel their handlers were all looking forward to what looked to be a fine and warm day. The judges for the day were Mrs Alison Evans and Ms Heather Mayes. The ground that had been selected to run the tests (Puppy, and Novice & Open) over was a wooded area with well-developed bracken and well-spaced out trees. The puppy and novice test was run at the same time with Heather judging the Puppy and Alison judging the Novice. The open was to be judged by both judges. The Puppy was being run in an open area of long grass followed by a small wooded area. The test was to start with an obedience test which started with the handler walking their dog to heal off the lead to a tree 50 meters away then sitting the dog up and walk to another tree 50 meters away without the dog. Then returning to the dog and walking back to the second tree with the dog at heal. When you got back to the tree you once again sat the dog up and you returned to the judge. Then a shot was fired and a dummy was thrown and the judge asked you to recall the dog back to you without the dog trying to pick up the dummy. This was then followed with a hunt up and a seen retrieve. The Novice test was run over similar ground as the Puppy test with a lot more trees in this area with a seen retrieve followed by a blind after hunting up the ground first. The open was run in a much heavier area of bracken and at times it was quite difficult for the dogs to see the seen dummy when it was thrown as they were below the canopy of the bracken most of the time. But all the dogs manage to retrieve their retrieves ok. By just after 1230hrs all the handlers had done their runs The awards for the day were as follows. After the prize giving the judges commented that Puppy class was so close and in the end there was only one point between the first two places. The Novice dogs did very well but there were area’s that people needed to work on. With the open test both judges were very impressed with the way the dogs found the seen retrieve when they were lucky if they could see it when it was thrown due to the canopy of bracken.
