The Wombs 2008 album Halfway Between Moscow And Paris has been completely remastered and is available to download for free from alandriscoll/thewomb/paris.htm This album was recorded in Torquay (UK) in 2008 shortly after the demise of a 7-year relationship and is a weird record to listen back to now. It seems split between surprisingly graceful break-up songs, self-destructive punk freakouts, and blindly optimistic odes to future romantic prospects. The songs themselves hold up far better than Id expected when I embarked on this remastering project. The circumstances of the original recording were so chaotic that it was never mixed properly, and the whole record had a tendency to sound like it was being shouted down a phone. This might have given it a certain lo-fi gravitas, but it hardly made for an accessible album. Now its been painstakingly cleaned up while remaining true to the original vision for the songs, and its properly listenable for the first time in six years. Im surprised how catchy and energetic it sounds, while its hopefully easier to connect with the emotional content now its not buried beneath six layers of fuzz. Anyway, I hope some of you out there enjoy and connect with it. Painful life experiences can often lead to good art and hopefully this was one of those occasions.
