The YIR provides three teacher credentials: Yoga Instructor (YI), - TopicsExpress

The YIR provides three teacher credentials: Yoga Instructor (YI), Advanced Yoga Instructor (AYI), and Student Yoga Instructor (SYI), renewed annually. After agreeing with a statement of commitment, confirming that statement with a donation (set by the instructor her- or himself), and presenting qualifications for public review, registrants can also use YIR text- and symbol-links to their YIR profile page, while also enjoying other privileges of membership. For practical purposes the main difference between YI and AYI is that AYIs are also qualified to train yoga practitioners to become instructors. An SYI is an experienced yoga practitioner currently studying Yoga Instruction, but not yet offering or prepared to teach courses independently. YIR credentials are not the equivalent or some kind of imitation of a professional certification or accreditation granted in accordance with standardized, legally accountable examinations or professional review processes. What the YIR offers, rather than a claim of something “like” a professional accreditation, is a completely transparent process encouraging and facilitating due diligence on the part of prospective employers, students, and colleagues, alongside a broad re-dedication from within the broad yoga community to sound and ethical practices. If a more rigorous, accountable, and transparent system becomes available, or proves even possible and also desirable for yoga, YIR credentials will serve as an adjunct to it. In the meantime yoga teachers will, of course, remain free to use whatever other accreditation or certification they have received in addition to or in place of YIR credentials. The YIR also offers a fourth type of credential, Yoga Practitioner (YP), for non-teachers and non-trainees who wish to encourage and support the movement for authentic and ethical yoga teaching. Though the YP credential is open to all who support our project, in order to avoid the potential for or appearance of collusion or conflict of interest, the YIR will not produce a separate teaching school credential of any kind.
