The Zapatista leader Marcos is declared dead so the murdered teacher Galeano can live. These were his last words. Strange stuff. Can only really be understood in the context of ancient belief in symbolic sacrifice. The Zapatistas rose up against a central government that were swamping them with U.S. GMO corn allowed to flood in due to the North American Trade Agreement, thus destroying their way of life after thousands of years. They set up an independent self sufficient region under local control. They are currently under attack for trying to grow their own food and rule themselves. Theirs might be the first of the true battles against big food businesses like Monsanto. I watch in fascination and with the feeling that there will be many places like this in the near future. We owe it to these extraordinary people of vision and courage to spread the word about what is happening.
