The Zen Master Hakuin lived in a town in Japan. He was held in high regard and many people came to him for spiritual teaching. Then it happened that the teenage daughter of his next-door neighbor became pregnant. When being questioned by her angry and scolding parents as to the identity of the father, she finally told them that he was Hakuin, the Zen Master. When the parents questioned Hakuin, he replied Is that so? The news spread throughout the town and Hakuin lost his reputation. When the baby was born, the parents of the teenager brought the child to Hakuin and stated You are the father so you look after him. Master Hakuin took in the baby and raised him until he was a year old, with loving care, when the teenager finally confessed to her parents that the real father of the baby was a young man who worked at the local butcher shop. When the parents went to Hakuin to retrieve the baby and apologize, he stated as he gave the baby back to them, Is that so?
