The Zimbabwe Institute of Management National Manager of the Year Awards 7th June Sango Conference Centre, Harare, Zimbabwe Viola Musariri The 35th Zimbabwe Institute of Management Annual Manager of the year awards is a concept conceptualised in the late seventies and is meant to promote the best management and leadership practices at senior and executive level of management. The awards are available for presentation each year to personalities who in the opinion of the Council of the Institute have made outstanding contribution to management in Zimbabwe. Nominations are invited from both the private and public services sector and the final choice is made by a special panel of adjudicators appointed by the Council of the Institute. Over the years, the award has evolved but remains steeped in identifying, recognizing and rewarding disciplined managers in the country that in a particular year perform above and beyond set targets within their organisations and within their sector of participation. The awards affirm excellence through a rigorous assessment system. The distinguished track record that the Manager of the year has been able to achieve in the country has a strong backbone anchored in the open nomination process which is open to the market in which the companies operate within. Key success factors have been the categorization of sectors. This enables the Institute to compare like to like. To this effect, six categories have been developed and these are - Private Sector Manager of the Year - Public Services Manager of the Year - Young Manager of the Year - Small to Medium Scale Manager of the Year - Customer Service Excellence Award - National Contribution Award The seventh category - Lifetime Management Achievement Award Is awarded by ZIM to recognize contributions over the whole of a career, rather than or in addition to single contributions. This award is intended to honour the highest level of achievement in Management by a business leader. It is not necessarily an annual award but is only given when an appropriate honouree is available. Award Criteria include: • The honouree must have demonstrated sustained leadership and innovation that significantly altered management practice. In this regard, “sustained” means across business cycles. It is hard to envision this period being shorter than three decades. • Furthermore, this leadership and innovation must be such that it significantly impacts management practice in industries beyond the home industry of the honouree, and is the subject of academic attention in major business schools. • The honouree should be in the later stages of his/her career or be recently retired. Generally this would mean someone over 55 years of age, although occasional exceptions may occur.
