The Zimbabwe Red Cross Society has responded to the Mutare Urban Flash Floods of 17 December 2014 that have rendered many homeless, killed one six year old girl and left a trail of destruction. Houses and household goods have been destroyed, food reserves swept away and sewer systems damaged creating a looming health hazard in the area. Red Cross volunteers have registered 69 affected households with help from the IOM and Department of Social Services. Some of the victims have been moved to the nearby Murahwa School while some have sought refugee with their relatives. The organisation has so far distributed 38 blankets, 18 kitchen sets, 24 water buckets, 15 packs of Sanitary Pads and 100 tabs of soap with Mutare City council and the Minister of Provincial Affairs weighing in with food relief. Zimbabwe is currently receiving heavy rains with expectation for more as we move towards year end and into the new year. The Zimbabwe Red Cross Society is on high alert and it is hoped more aid is received to curtail widespread disasters.
