The airport armed police battalion seized 280 gold bars from an aircraft at the Shahjalal International Aiport early Tuesday morning. APBn Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Iqbal Hossain said cleaners found the gold bars in the toilet of an aircraft that landed in Dhaka on a flight from Dubai. Later customs officials and APBN personnel recovered the bars. He said they assumed the bars contained 30 kgs of gold. There has occurred a series of seizures of gold bars and similar items in Dhaka and Chittagong airports in recent months. A short list: On Oct 1, 14 gold bars were seized from the flight of Doha that landed at Chittagong Shah Amanat Airport. On Sept 1, about a month ago, customs officials seized four gold bars and 69 golden chains weighing 410 grams from the same airport. In Aug, 156 gold bars weighing 18 kg were seized from a sports bag from Dhaka’s Shahjalal International Airport. Customs officials on Aug 20 seized 7.5 kg gold, i-phone and huge memory cards from an Indian citizen boarding a Kolkata-bound flight coming from Hong Kong. On July 24, 124 gold bars were seized from a flight coming from Nepal in the same airport. Some 146 gold bars were seized from a passenger in Chittagong airport in mid July. On July 6, gold bar weighing 25 kg were seized from a flight coming from Kuwait in the Dhaka airport. There is no official explanation as to why this unusual trafficking in gold is taking place.
