The algal bloom in Lake Erie has been in the news again. Here is a link to my geology blog that I posted in May 2013. The blog describes the geology study being carried out by the Ontario Geological Survey (OGS) to help better understand what is going on around Lake Erie and the algal bloom. My next remark here is a bit promotional, so be warned...pitch coming. Many people still see OGS as being focused on one very narrow topic. OGS is about the geology of the Earth in Ontario - the Ontario beneath our feet. That geology information is provided to all people to help inform their discussion and decisions about: environmental baseline, health and safety related to geological hazards, infrastructure (Internet connection to roads), geological habitat (plants, animals, people!), impact of climate change, and economy (groundwater, energy, minerals). Planners can benefit a lot by considering the geology beneath our feet.
