The morning after her baptism we found out that her lungs were flooded.We packed immediately to go to San Antonio ,where a cath was performed,the next day open heart surgery followed.At this point her pulse oxygen had dropped to 42. CHD kids do not look obviously sick.Many live with undetected congenital heart defects for years.Actor John Ritter died in his 50s of an undetected congenital heart defect.Many of the cases of college sports players collapsing and dying is due to undetected heart defects. A test costing less than $10 and that is non-invasive could have prevented that (pulse oximetry test).If at any point pulse oxygen saturation is not normal (93-99 is normal range),ask for further testing (echo,ultrasound etc)!
