The answer to religious extremism is NOT bombing campaigns. Persecution is like ambrosia to death cults. You just have to look at our homegrown extremists, who crave martyrdom. Nope. The only way were ever going to be rid of Muslim fanatics is to encourage secularization of Muslim societies. That means economic development, the creation and support of professional and bourgeois classes, and the establishment of democratic institutions. All the things Ive just mentioned are incompatible with colonial client states. And Im counting the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia among the colonial governments. For the past week I have been teetering on the brink of despair. I dont believe the President is happy about our renewed intervention into the miasma which is the Iraq war. This is a political, rather than a strategic, move. Any fool who is capable of disinterested analysis knows that nothing really has changed in Iraq. It is still the same clusterf**k today that it was six months ago. But our domestic political situation has changed. And that should give us all pause for reflection, because the pundit class is beginning to listen to John McCain and Lindsey Graham. How rational can it be? I know the President is firstly a politician who cannot govern if he doesnt survive. But he has disappointed me -- profoundly and critically. No doubt I will forgive the man, because I still love everything he represents. But I wont be one of the lemmings cascading off the cliff into the abyss. This time the daisy chain will begin without me. This is madness. Stark, utter, complete and useless madness. Our democracy may, in fact, be dead already. Halliburton made a lower bid.
