The answer to yesterdays plant quiz is cowpeas! Specifically the Tetapeche Gray Mottled variety. Cowpeas are also known as black eyed peas or southern peas. Because originate in Africa, cowpeas have become an important crops for hot climates. At Native Seeds/SEARCH we conserve 30 cowpea accessions from the SW US and NW Mexico. The peas may be dried and cooked like dried beans and the young tender pods eaten like green beans. This who guessed beans or peas were close. Vigna unguiculata, the species name for cowpeas, is in the Fabaceae family - the same as other legumes.
