The anti-GMO crowd, of which Greenpeace and The Suzuki* Foundation are only two of many active participants, is astonishingly evil. David Suzuki began his science career as a fruit fly *geneticist*! Transgenic Salmon (TS) were developed TWENTY-FIVE years ago, and remain a technological achievement in limbo due to the Green Luddites (GLs). Normal aquaculture salmon require 36 months to grow to marketable size. TS grow twice as rapidly, taking only 18 months. (TS were recently reported on the Teaching Kids News website as Food or Frankenfish, .) Whilst the GLs tear their hair over declining wild salmon populations, they simultaneously abhor the TS solution, which would compete in commercial markets with wild caught salmon. The GLs even laud wild caught salmon products over aquaculture salmon products! (The GLs also argue that salmon lice prevalence is increased by ocean pen aquaculture. So they spend their donated $millions to oppose aquaculture, rather than rather than on a constructive solution, say, GM salmon resistant to lice). Insanely, GM salmon languish in little green tubs only to be shipped to Panama (why?) for burial! In addition to opposing Yellow Rice, the Vitamin A in which can save 1/2 million lives a year in Asia (easy to Google), these groups including the ought-to-know-better Suzuki Foundation, oppose genetic modification of commercial trees. The same people who curse modern lumbering for clearing forests, oppose GM trees that would greatly improve tree *farming*. Genetic modification can add traits traits such as insect resistance, herbicide resistance, sterility and reduced lignin, says Suzuki. He then quickly argues that these traits have the potential to wreak ecological havoc throughout the world’s native forests. Well, raising wheat, potatoes, corn and cattle, genetically modified by centuries of painstaking breeding, did that too, thank goodness! Let the Yellow Rice, GM trees & GM Salmon provide their commercial benefits to human lives, not government, supervision!!
