The approval of the autonomous status granted the Local Govt by - TopicsExpress

The approval of the autonomous status granted the Local Govt by the National Assembly as part of the constitutional change is a step in the right direction. It is in my view, the ONLY recognisable legislative action since our democratic experiment that can alter a step change for the greater good of all. There are two questions begging for answers: - have they done enough in this regard to achieve true autonomy for the third tier of governance? - will it scale through the 2/3rd state assemblies approval required by law? In response to the first question, my view is that they have not done enough. It is a half baked measure that will not achieve anything. In true spirit of democratic principle of checks and balances that tier can only be truly autonomous; if the local legislative arm is completely separated from its executive arm. True Nigerian Worldwide Organisation will champion this cause. Secondly, political representation at this level should purely be on part - time basis. Allowances paid to elected representatives should be base on attendances on issues and matters that affect local people. If this can be achieved, you can be rest assured that our people will begin to feel the gains of democracy. To answer the second question, I simply say I have my doubts. I am not sure of the knowledge and competencies on performance of state Legislatures across Nigeria. May God help us to see this good deed come through for our greater future.
