The area is a stark reminder of the role Brazil played in the slave trade. More than four million slaves were taken to Brazil over three centuries. That is 40% of all slaves brought to the Americas. And despite the official abolition of the slave trade in 1831, the clandestine trade continued to flourish. Slavery itself, rather than the trade in slaves, was not banned until 1888, making Brazil the last country in the western world to abolish the practice.
