The assault on fully funding Mississippis Public Schools is in full effect. Today, vis-à-vis SB 2695, the MS Senate passed legislation supporting school vouchers, further diminishing funds available for the public schools that are already underfunded. Supporting school vouchers, on its face, seems harmless enough. But it is hard to ignore the fact that immediately after the State of Mississippi began its statewide refusal to fully fund every school district in the state in 2008 (continuing through today, even while the states funds have grown), legislation began pushing charter schools. In 2009, the Senate passed SB 2664 giving way to allow up to 20 charter schools throughout the state. How much more are they intending to under fund public schools? How broad will the allowance for charter schools become? Will the State soon allow 100 privatized schools? Voters have to be vigilant about our childrens futures and get educated on the repercussions of the States pursuit of SCHOOL choice, most likely at the peril of public schools. Choice sounds great, but like anything, real choice will be measured by far more than a just a parents desire for better education for his children. Ones financial ability to afford choice will limit the very poor children that would ideally benefit most from choosing a better school. Many indicators suggest that the choice will be more the schools than the actual parents. People, get educated and demand more for Mississippi.
