The attack on the French magazine Charlie Hebdo is disgusting, cowardly and reactionary in the extreme, and will only add to a growing culture of violent Islamophobia on one hand, and violent ISIS-type extremism on the other. Those who target journalists for murder and maiming are to be condemned. None of this benefits humanity in the slightest, be it in France, in Ireland or in Palestine. And you can be sure that this attack will be used to tar Palestinians legitimate struggle for their rights and freedom. Therefore its worth mentioning that Israeli occupation forces frequently and flagrantly attack journalists in Palestine (and Lebanon), as well as their offices and equipment. The Committee for the Protection of Journalists and Reporters Without Borders have both regularly upbraided Israel about these attacks, and its failure to investigate them. Following one such attack on Al-Aqsa Mark Regev (yes, him), justified this war crime by saying that the stations journalists were not legitimate and that the media is used by [the government in Gaza] for command and control and also for security purposes, Indeed, Reporters Without Borders lists Israel as world’s second most lethal country for journalists in 2014, having killed at least 7 Palestinian media workers last year. (See: electronicintifada.net/blogs/ali-abunimah/israel-worlds-second-most-lethal-country-journalists-2014-watchdog-says) Of course, all military targetting of journalists are war crimes according to Protocol 1, Article 79 of the Geneva Convention - and should be prosecuted as such.
