The average dementia journey commences about 3 years before diagnosis. Everybody’s diagnosis comes about in different ways and the fact that we are all individuals means that the disease affects nobody identically. It’s a fraught time, isolating for not only the person diagnosed with the disease but also their families. While people recognise that there are others out there navigating the dementia experience, it can be hard to find the time to physically go searching for support groups, especially in the early days when they are still coming to terms with the diagnosis and what it means for them. Bupa have collaborated with Carer’s Australia and Alzheimer’s Australia to establish on online forum for people to talk about dementia. It provides a community for people to get together, share experiences and gather information, at a time and in a manner which suits them. Forum topics include coping with memory loss; understanding needs and behaviours; I have dementia; I care for somebody with dementia; LGBTI; caring for carers; younger onset dementia; talking about the research; diagnosis and where to next?; wills and advanced care, and ideas for capturing life histories. talkingaboutdementia
