The background vocals on Gimme Shelter never fail to give me goosebumps, especially when Merry Claytons voice cracks... Wow. That song is a top 5 favorite of mine, eternally. Im watching 20 Feet From Stardom and the story behind the recording of that track is amazing. Mrs. Clayton was at home in bed when she got the call from the studio, asking if she would come in for the track. She arrived at the studio in her pajamas, rollers in her hair and very pregnant. She sat down and cut a take, then did another with the goal of, ...blowing everyone in the room away. Damned if she didnt do just that. Sadly, shortly after she left the studio she miscarried. Unbelievable.
