The backlash for Guardians of the Galaxy has started a little bit. Ive seen a few people complain that it has the same plot as every Marvel movie lately: big bad evil guy wants the glowy Macguffin so he can destroy/conquer the (a) world. Its incredible how profoundly that criticism misses the point. Without the strong characters that we can relate to, the development of those characters and their relationships throughout the film, and the great pacing and comic-timing of the script, we wouldnt care about the plot and the bad guy at all. But because GotG has all those things, the plot and bad guy could have been almost anything and it would have worked, because the audience was invested in the characters. As it is, I found Ronan worked well as a villain, with his all-too-serious religious extremism juxtaposed with the goofball silliness of the good guys. The climax of the film (no spoilers) illustrated that perfectly. It was feel-good vs feel-bad and, because I was invested in the characters, I cared who won.
