The basic guidelines for our success, as written by our coach, Michael Wellman: #1 Sons Softball Rules 1. Respect the game, your teammates, yourself. Play like a champion every time out. 2. Talk is cheap 3. To hustle should go without saying. How many times has a rally been sparked by a hustle play!? 4. BUT - Hustling is no substitute for intelligent play. 5. Chemistry wins games, league titles, and Cakey Cups. Work to add to the team chemistry, not draw from it. 6. Coaching the bases is not for everyone. 7. When you coach a base you are the eyes of the runner. Accept that responsibility wholly by knowing the game situation. In other words – Son’s base coaches have their heads in the game. 8. Be a good teammate – show your confidence in the other players on the team. 9. Hitting is contagious. It starts with one determined hitter. Spread the disease! 10. On defense, an out is precious. The Son’s win by playing for the sure out rather than the sensational double play. In the words of Big Al Matis – “Keep the Force!” 11. Phil’s philosophy: Control each inning of each game and our chances of winning rise 10-fold. Control is made easy by getting the lead off hitter out and keeping the runner on first base when possible. 12. On offense, every out is precious. We get three outs per inning. Make the opposition earn all three. 13. Seven times a game we have a chance for a two out rally. 14. A hero – everyone on the team will have a chance to be a hero; More than one. If you blow your first chance don’t let that prevent you from missing your next chance. 15. If your abilities allow, have the confidence to make the great play. At the same time, if conditions are such, have the discipline to settle for the play that anyone on the team can make. 16. There is a time and a place for the great play. A calculation of whether the time and place is now includes an assessment of the abilities of all parties involved in the play. 17. Outs on the base paths are rarely acceptable – Jaeger rounds penalties will be awarded to those that are guilty of running into a precious out. 18. Base coaching from the dugout is counterproductive. If you are not a coach on the field keep the comments constructive not prescriptive. This re-affirms the importance of good base coaching… 19. Strikeouts are awarded with shots of tequila!!! 20. Masters are Son’s over 40, Grand Masters are Son’s over 50. Respect your Masters! 21. Rookies stay rookies until replacements are found (added by Chien)
