The benefits of cardio can never be understated. I like to get mine by chasing my escaped husky along the bypass, who thinks its perfectly acceptable to race out through the back gate and into oncoming traffic, a part of her thinking shes an extra from Snow Dogs and must make a bizarre quest back to the arctic. Its also better if youre caught unawares by her great escape and must run after her in your underwear, your dressing gown billowing behind you, like youre Superman who has forgotten how to fly and must save the world on foot. Also, while youre at it, decide to charge out into the world with nothing on your feet. After all, you do get quite the sensation when sharp stones gouge the bottoms of your feet. Adrenaline also plays a part, and when it wears off you begin to realise that, as youve finally caught up with her and are dragging her back home, her still trying to get away from you and make a brave attempt into the wild, you realise you are still outside the house in your underwear. Its okay, you say. You work out at the gym, and if you walk in slow motion you can look like youre in a lost episode of Baywatch. But people in their vehicles still cast confused looks at you, wondering just what the hell you think youre doing. So, in closing, the positives far outweigh the negatives. For one, I amazed myself how fast I could run knowing my beloved dog was threatening to leave me for colder climates. And secondly, I surprised myself at my ability to weave between cars and cyclists without even a scratch on car or body. You never know what youre capable of until your dog decides shes sick of you. Cardio. Dont take it lightly.
