The benighted HS2 project commenced as the brainchild of Lord Adonis when he was transport secretary. Then the coalition took office, and in the way these projects morph into cross-party national interest issues, it became a flagship policy for the government. Now Labour are trying to assume leadership on this again, this time via Ed Balls, who states quite reasonably that what he is not going to do is support it when the Government are acting as cheerleaders rather than proper stewards of public money. Further, there is a disused Beeching-era track called the Great Central that could be reopened at a fraction of the cost - not necessarily as a high speed line, but to take freight and relieve the capacity issues on other lines that are the main rationale for HS2.........And this would cost only £6 billion. Wind the clock on. Today, Lord Adonis reports to Ed Balls. Grant Shapps is reduced to pleas to him to confront his boss in defence of the HS2 concept and routing, bizarre !
