The best reason to believe that we really landed men on the Moon, and returned them safely to the Earth: The Soviets admitted that we did it. The space race was the biggest, most expensive propaganda battle in history. The Russians had the radio equipment to determine whether the Apollo transmissions were really coming from the Moon, and if they had the appropriate delay (due to the finite speed of light). They also had the radar to determine whether we really launched a spacecraft (with the appropriate mass) to the Moon, and to determine whether a spacecraft (with appropriately decreased mass) then came back. They also had spies throughout the U.S. government. If they had been able to prove we faked the Moon landings, it would have been their greatest propaganda victory ever. It would have undermined confidence in American (and western) technology, and it would have proven that the American government was lying to the worldInstead, they congratulated us. Grudgingly. We really, really, really sent men to the Moon (and safely returned them to the Earth).
