The big phases in my life are marked by a predominant outer force. Indiana Jones, Sigur Rós, the Steelers, Jesus Christ Superstar, the Monkees, Darth Vader. One of those phases began with a one-off appearance of an alien on Happy Days. Not long after that alien got his own show, and Mork was a phenomenon. I dressed as him for Halloween (though being a fat kid my classmates thought I was Rerun from Whats Happening). I became such a Robin Williams fan that in 5th grade my teacher took Mr out of class and walked me down to another class just so that teacher could show me the napkin that Williams autographed in a restaurant the night before. (That was a rush that wouldnt be equaled until the day I shook Lynn Swanns hand.) My folks bought me his album when it came out (I was 9 and I didnt understand half the jokes until I listened to it again last month). My parents would always took me to his films (even ones like Garp and Moscow On The Hudson) until I was old enough to take myself. Just last week I watched Popeye (my favorite) with them. Thats how I want to remember Robin Williams. So many stories. So much laughter. Always with me and my family. I dont want to remember him for all the tears we have now. So many suffer from diagnosed depression, myself included, and unfortunately its not a cut and dry just cheer up thing. I have no advice, I dont think there is any. Everyone suffers differently. Its tragic we only address it after a loss. The best way to deal with it that Ive found is to just live. Live full and give a big middle finger to the face of depression. Its not always easy, it might not always seem worth it, but eventually it will all make sense--you just have to keep yourself in the equation. Robin, thank you for having a hand in influencing the man I am today--I am grateful. I hope youve found your peace.
