The buck stops here is a phrase that was popularized by U.S. President Harry S. Truman, who kept a sign with that phrase on his desk in the Oval Office. The phrase refers to the fact that the President has to make the decisions and accept the ultimate responsibility for those decisions. The expression is said to have originated from the game of poker. Truman, an avid poker player, received the sign as a gift in 1945. On more than one occasion, President Truman referred to the desk sign in public statements. In his farewell address to the American people given in January 1953, President Truman referred to this concept in asserting that, The President- whoever he is- has to decide. He cant pass the buck to anybody. No one else can do the deciding for him. Thats his job.
