The butterfly effect. One action, one mindful choice, one small movement having potential to create a global wave of change. My psych teacher gave my class our first assignment and it is to reflect on this, The Butterfly Effect One aspect of a multidirectional study in psychology is the butterfly effect. This is the idea that a small event or thing can have a large or significant impact on the something else or so other event. The idea of a butterfly flapping it wings in china will create a storm a thousand miles away. What are your thoughts or experiences which either support this idea or may dispute it. Are we all integrated in some way that our choices and actions have an effect on not just our primary relations, but the whole world? What if any, are some simple examples of the butterfly effect in your life? Please post a thread in this discussion reflecting your views and if you like, please comment on something that you may have read that was posted by another class member. Please be respectful in your comments. Paul One person in our class had talked about the phenomenon of the ice bucket challenge. Mass media has that global effect. When I think of the Butterfly Effect ... .. . Well I think of science, eating healthy, and creating a lifestyle ! We all know we are made up of compounds and whatever we eat is who.. or what we become. If this is true then absolutely everything we do has an effect on our lives and on our future. I also think about how our mood makes our conversations. If we are in a bad mood and feel crappy then generally youre going to have a crappy conversation. I know that when I am positive and up beat my conversations with my friends and family seem to go much better rather if I were to decide to be negative. When a Butterfly flaps its wings the air molecules will move and those air molecules bump and ripple just like a pebble in water. Once that energy from the butterflies wings ripples through the air like an invisible sound wave and reaches a different molecule .... like a more solid compound that is a different polynomial make up then what happens to it? Does it change into a new molecule, become a part of that new molecule, or does it just stop to exist? I think everything is connected on a molecular level and Einsteins quantum mechanical theory could explain this further also. Sooooo since I think we are all connected on a molecular level; I think all of our actions matter all so. There is also a way of thinking called ignorance. If there is a reason to ignore something... well you are choosing to ignore it but that doesnt mean it will not effect your life. However if you genuinely didnt notice or choose to ignore something well then is that innocence? I think it would be considered as an innocent ignorance. I really hope I dont offend anyone with my ideas. Reply William Daniloff William Daniloff Yesterday Manage Discussion Entry I agree with your first statement. We are what we eat and how we take care of ourselves. Im interested in what you were getting at in your last comment about ignocence. Could you elaborate? And there is nothing you can say that will offend me. FYI Reply Traci Anderson Traci Anderson 10:09pm Manage Discussion Entry I would love to elaborate. I know that when I choose to ignore something there will still be an effect. There could be a what if scenario where I would always wonder ... well what if. I am not sure about anyone else but it drives me nuts when I have a regret what if. If there is no reason behind ignoring something then is there always going to be that what if. Like standing up for someone when no one else does. Does not doing anything truly cause more damage rather than being the bully? I havent gotten a reply yet but I think I will really like this class.
