The campaign for Scottish independence was, at heart a struggle - TopicsExpress

The campaign for Scottish independence was, at heart a struggle for the right to do things differently. Here, Paul Mason talks about how the failure of large states to resolve the economic crisis will increasing lead to smaller nations and regions breaking away to do things differently. He writes There is a doom scenario for developed countries that goes like this: their populations grow old, placing massive strain on public spending; inequality rises, leading to an erosion of the tax base; ultimately, they go bust, probably facing an energy supply crisis along the way. The ones that do not go bust become ugly, poor and intolerant places. We can already see the beginning of this trend in the hard-up grey hairs who are attracted to UKIP. Ironically, the only way to ensure that their pensions get paid is for greater inward migration and massive state led innovation using public money, as Paul points out in this article.
