The campaign took place. Members of the Committee for Protecting Persecuted Citizens of Turkmenistan reported that many Ashgabat residents were out on the streets at 9 p.m. on 29 June. In particular there was a large congregation of people in the 30th and 9th residential districts as well as Parakhat-3 at 9 p.m. Car owners occasionally honked, flashed their headlights and waved with their hands greeting those colleagues on the oncoming traffic lane who responded to them. Let us remind that the campaign of civil disobedience was scheduled to be held at the time when the information program Vatan, which for the most part was devoted to the President’s birthday, was being broadcast on all Turkmen TV channels. According to the organizers’ plan, by taking out to the streets the residents demonstrated to the authorities and first of all to each other that they did not want to watch the official program that everybody is fed up with. Car owners were also encouraged to honk and flash their headlights at 9 p.m. Reportedly the residents of the capital are discussing what has happened among their friends and families and most of them perceive the events from a positive perspective. The Committee believes that the first campaign did take place and would like to thank everybody who participated in it. Similarcampaignsarescheduledtobeheldinthefuture.
